I was expecting some engaging presentations, to meet with friends old and new, and of course a modicum of debauchery.  I was not disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>Being of a linkbuilding persuasion one presentation in particular stood out for me, my takeaways from this detailed below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paddy Moogan: Let\u2019s talk about links baby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Paddy starts by outlining his session:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>site reviews with link suggestions<\/li>\n<li>generic tips<\/li>\n<li>plus some fun (shadier stuff).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately he asked us not to blog the \u2018fun stuff\u2019 \u2013 you\u2019ll have to pay up for a ticket to ThinkVisibility yourself for this \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p><strong>SITE: Thefoodplace.co.uk<\/strong><br \/>\nRestaurant review website<\/p>\n<p><strong>OVERVIEW:<\/strong><br \/>\nConduct a backlink analysis &#8211; always do this first, what type of links do you need?<br \/>\nSite has lots of sidebar \/ site wide links with 12.000 links from 383 domains, not very varied.<br \/>\nNeeds more domain diversity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LINKBUILDING IDEAS:<br \/>\nUse link bait and ego bait.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>start with easy wins, for example \u2018top 10 restaurants in Leeds\u2019, \u2018Top 10 restaurants in London\u2019 etc<\/li>\n<li>get people to come to your site and see that they are listed \u2013 shortlist the ones with websites that are likely to link to you.<\/li>\n<li>run a survey on your website and then get people to vote on which of the top 10 is the best, that way the restaurants themselves will encourage their customers and community to visit your site \u2013 extra traffic plus links.  Use poll daddy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Using twitter for links (the easy way)<\/strong><br \/>\nYou need a reasonable following on twitter.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornwallseo.com\/search\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/using-twitter-for-links.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cornwallseo.com\/search\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/using-twitter-for-links.jpg\" alt=\"using twitter for links\" title=\"using twitter for links\" width=\"541\" height=\"368\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1519\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nCheck which followers have websites; you can go through these people manually, or find all your followers and csv export them using <strong>friendorfollow.com<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Find their website URLs using qwerly.com , which allows you to do this without logging into twitter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This can take a long time, but a solution can be offered by scraping \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Paddy talks about how to do this.  Now, Paddy  is not the type of chap that needs to take a humility pill, and post presentation he flagged up this post on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.3wdl.co.uk\/2011\/03\/07\/getting-links-from-twitter\/\">getting links from your twitter friends<\/a> that describes the process in a succinct fashion.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reach out to them and ask for a link<\/li>\n<li>Launch link bait targeted at them via twitter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a great way to grab link targets really quickly and easily \u2013 the list is \u2018pre qualified\u2019 in the sense that they\u2019re already following you on twitter, and you already have a relationship with them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NB You\u2019ll probably want to weed your competitors out of this data (please don\u2019t ask for links, as a slap round the face often offends)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornwallseo.com\/search\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/no-links-given.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cornwallseo.com\/search\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/no-links-given.jpg\" alt=\"no links given\" title=\"no links given\" width=\"840\" height=\"205\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1523\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Other ideas<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Feature the restaurants in a newsletter<\/li>\n<li>Promote their special offers<\/li>\n<li>Review them on the blog<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Site: Smartcatlearning.com<\/strong><br \/>\nChildren\u2019s dyslexia test<\/p>\n<p><strong>OVERVIEW:<\/strong><br \/>\nCurrent situation \u2013 not much domain diversity, but some good strong links<\/p>\n<p><strong>LINKBUILDING IDEAS:<\/strong><br \/>\nIdentify opportunities<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Schools<\/li>\n<li>Parent groups<\/li>\n<li>Mummy bloggers (the internet is crawling with them)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornwallseo.com\/search\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/mummy-bloggers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cornwallseo.com\/search\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/mummy-bloggers.jpg\" alt=\"mummy bloggers\" title=\"mummy bloggers\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1526\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure this is the type of blogger we\u2019re looking for&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>How to find them?<br \/>\nstart with the basics (seriously): search for \u201clist of mummy bloggers\u201d<br \/>\nwhen you find a good one click on \u2018similar\u2019 link in the SERPs<\/p>\n<p>Use <strong>Followerwonk.com<\/strong> .  Performs a search in twitter bios, identifies those with \u2018mummy blogger\u2019 in bio, and also gives lots if useful data including real name, location, and number of tweets, friends and followers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SITE: Shopsafe.co.uk<\/strong><br \/>\nRetailer reviews and vouchers<\/p>\n<p><strong>LINKBUILDING IDEAS:<\/strong><br \/>\nEgo bait<br \/>\nawards for websites<br \/>\ngive badges to winners<br \/>\ndo across every category<\/p>\n<p>Hit wise do this very successfully.<\/p>\n<p>Blue sky idea \u2013 become a review aggregator<br \/>\nEncourage customers to leave more reviews<br \/>\nact as an independent review site<br \/>\nlet retailers use reviews on their own site, in exchange for a link<\/p>\n<p>Extra Tip<br \/>\nImplement microformats for shop reviews \u2013 reported 14% uplift in CTR from SERPS because of rich snippets (don\u2019t quote that!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>SITE: acornprinting.co.uk<\/strong><br \/>\nOffers t shirt printing<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nLINKBUILDING IDEAS:<\/strong><br \/>\nIdentify USPs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fair-trade supplier<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use advanced search operators to identify prospects:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornwallseo.com\/search\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/advanced-search-queries.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cornwallseo.com\/search\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/advanced-search-queries.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"advanced search queries\" width=\"581\" height=\"169\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1527\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>get link targets from fair-trade.org.uk website.  For example, get a list of local campaign groups, they likely be easier to target and more likely to link out.<\/li>\n<li>\nthink carefully about their existing customers \u2013 who do they supply?  Charities and universities would of course make great link targets.<\/li>\n<li>be careful \u2013 don\u2019t overdo the anchor text optimisation \u2013 stick to targeting branded terms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Link bait<br \/>\ni.e. Guinness world record for the most t shirts worn at one time \u2013 they could see if they could break the world record, with their own branded t shirts<\/p>\n<p><strong>SITE: gifts4men.com<\/strong><br \/>\nErm, they supply gifts for men.  Doh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LINKBUILDING IDEAS:<\/strong><br \/>\nCompetitions are always a corker for easy wins.<\/p>\n<ul>\nuse <strong>\t<\/p>\n<li>competitionhunter.com<\/strong> \u2013 Paddy can give you a list of links from competition sites if you email him (list of 20)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Guest blogging<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>find targets and do outreach first&#8230;.find the link targets, contact them, get the content, get it approved etc<\/li>\n<li>let them know you have 4 or 5 ideas, give them the overview, if they say nothing works for them ask them what type of stuff they would like?  Then you can write for them specifically, they feel special \/ valued and are more likely to run your copy and links<\/li>\n<li>when you have the contact and the person says \u2018yes\u2019 \u2013 get it produced (use oDesk, textbroker etc)<\/li>\n<li>add links to the top of the article, try and keep it at the top if you can. Higher CTR, but also Matt Cutts at pubcon gave a big hint about how google views links in bios.  Position of the link on the page is v. valuable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pro tip for agencies<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find top 10 generic sites and come back to them again and again with different clients, keep a data base of these sites<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Top tips for e commerce sites<br \/>\n<strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Safebuy.org.uk<\/strong>: you can submit to multiple categories and get a link from each, pricey but worth it<\/li>\n<li>Get links to product pages by making a screen cast of the product, embed code in the bottom (sounds painful), people can use it on their sites and will create deep links to your product pages.  Adfd HTML wrapper to your product page<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>General tips<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you\u2019re a new start up get a link from Smarta.com in their \u201860 second start up\u2019 posts<\/li>\n<li>Links from journalists \u2013 use journalisttweets.com to identify journos on twitter in your area, and by niche<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s it, phew!  The other stuff was so top secret, if I told you Paddy would make me suck sick through a sweaty sock.
