And almost every "best AI SEO tools" list is affiliate or vendor content. Frase's own guide names Frase the best AI visibility tool, and Profound published a review of a competitor's product. Treat rankings as marketing.

- AI writers (Jasper, Writesonic, Surfer AI): generate drafts.
- AI visibility/GEO trackers (Profound, Peec, Otterly, SE Ranking, Semrush AI Toolkit): track whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and others cite you.
Issues
- Scores are weak predictors. Originality.ai found Surfer's score correlated with rankings at 26%, against 17.5% for Clearscope. That is r=0.26, roughly 7% of variance. Several reviews misread it as "26% of ranking". The scores are also built from SERP snapshots of pages already ranking, so the test is partly circular. Surfer also cites its own benchmark.
- Google targets scaled, low-value output, not AI. Its policy covers mass page production through AI, automation or humans, aimed at manipulating rankings. Enforcement is real. One August 2026 case study showed a site losing rankings for over 200K queries, with programmatic pages plus AI text.
- The AI-content evidence conflicts. Ahrefs found 74.2% of new pages contain some AI content and only a 0.011 correlation with penalties. Semrush found purely AI pages held the top spot about 9% of the time, against about 80% for mostly human pages. Both are correlational, so who publishes what confounds them.
- GEO trackers are noisy. AI answers change run to run, so single-run data is noise. Also, Semrush's toolkit measures but doesn't do the off-page work that changes visibility.
Principles
- Use scores as a coverage floor, not a target.
- Volume without original input is the risk. First-hand experience and data are what tools can't supply.
- Watch velocity. A sudden jump from a few posts a month to dozens is a pattern Google's systems can flag.
- Never buy a tracker that can't explain its prompt averaging.
- Measurement without an editorial loop is wasted spend.
My judgment, not sourced: a solo consultant likely needs at most one optimiser, and only above roughly 10 articles a month. Skip paid GEO trackers until you have a specific decision they would change. Prices vary by source, so check vendor pages.
