400 People might be a tight squeeze in my Cottage, but on Stumbleupon 400 fans are welcome

by Lyndon Antcliff on October 19, 2007

I just gained my 400th fan on Stumbleupon My growth rate on Stumble has been exponential the last couple of months. I think I had less that 100 fans 3 months ago. I changed the way I use Stumble and people seem to like it.

I don’t even call it a tactic, as the way I am using it is the way I would use it if it gathered no friends. Basically all I do is us it as a bookmarking tool and am very focussed on the topics I cover, which is online marketing.

Other benefits are that it’s a great way for me to inform people what I am into and what kind of material I wish to be associated with.

  • I only submit quality stuff
  • I don’t submit my own stuff
  • I am very generous, I even submit posts from people I don’t like
  • I have become very aware of what others submit

Stumble is great because you can use it whichever way suits your needs. This is why I spend more time on it than any other social bookmarking service. I think I blog about Stumbleupon more than any other site, this is simply because I like it more.

My advice is use the site as a tool, don’t try to game it or try tricks. The benefit will reveal itself as you use it. It may not even be what you think.

Thanks to all those who have added themselves as a fan. I hope to live up to expectations. I am only able to add 200 people so apologies that I cannot add you.

The benefits of adding me as a fan means you get a feed of all the online marketing sites I stumble, you get to read what I read. There is an RSS feed on my submissions, simply add that to your rss reader and you will see all my submissions. I have quickly set up an rss feed of my submits here, but it ain’t pretty. I intend to aggreagate a number of my social feeds.

Frankly, I still haven’t really figure out on how to maneuver myself in Stumble upon. Maybe one day you can come up with an e-book or something.

Lyndoman October 19, 2007 at 9:43 am

costa, it’s easy. You simply have to invest a lot of time into it. I guess an ebook could tell you the mechanics of the tool, but you really have to use it and adopt your own technique to suit your strategy.

One thing to do, is honestly answer the question of what you want out of it, is it all about traffic, making contacts, chatting up nubile college girls. All require different ways of use.

Perhaps that is what the e-book should be about, describing the different ways Stumbleupon can be used.

I will do my best here to give information out for free.

I use it in a couple of ways. I have a lot of non-work interests like humor, cats etc and I get a lot of those when I Stumble so i find that relaxing. But I only add friends who have the same work interests as me – internet marketing, blogging, social media, seo etc and then what I also do is change my channel to ‘friends’ and stumble that. Doing that brings me all sorts of cool blog posts from people I hadn’t even heard of. Its a brilliant way of finding new information.

I’ve started to Stumble by keywords in search that interest me , in my case philosophy and psycholohy. I know you can select ‘groups’ to join, but this seems more flexible as you can drop in words that spring to mind and don’t quite fit the ‘group’. Giving a proper comment rather than ‘great stumbles’ seems to develop friendhips better too (no suprises there!) I agree, at first I didn’t ‘get’ stumble, now I always have delicious and technorati tabbed up with it, and sometimes Squidoo to capture good Stumbles. Whilst picture Stumbles show interestin stuff I’m getting a bit bored now with whacky surrealistic and fluffy cat images

When you reach 500 I’ll start you a fanclub with cheerleaders and the whole pack;)

“I am very generous, I even submit posts from people I don?t like”

Do you mean my posts?
:P

Reasonable Robinson October 19, 2007 at 12:37 pm

must try harder I’ve only got 43 Stumble friends :(

Andy Beard October 19, 2007 at 1:38 pm

I think number of friends is partially a reflection on overall online audience size, but also quality and niche of the content you stumble, and how you present it.

I am not just a few shy of 500 friends now, with less than 1000 stumbles.

Having lots of friends doesn’t necessarily mean I have more influence

I also now promote my Stumbleupon feed in a number of other location, including Technorati, Gooruze and Mybloglog.

@wiep, how can I not like you :)

@RR it’s just a matter of time and working the accout

@Andy, yeah you are one of the few people in the space that has more friends than more, but I think I will be hot on your tail. Hehe. You’re right, it doesn’t give your account more just, but it does mean you are more connected and your feed reaches more people.

Its really great to be your friend. I actually like almost all the posts you stumble. Im also trying to increase my fans number and it is only 60 now.. I should work hard on it.

I also love stumble and am trying to spend much more time there.

I can not figure out for the life of me how to add images within my profile, when you review a site?

Oh master show me the way! :)

Great work Lyndon…

Thanks man!

I’ve been using SU more recently, and I really like the way it connects bloggers to each other (I guess that’s the whole idea, but it seems more effective than other social sites). Congrats on all the fans, I’m one of them.

David Airey October 22, 2007 at 11:25 am

Well aren’t you and Andy the popular two?

Congrats buddy, though I’m happy with my one friend Norman.

Matt Ridout October 22, 2007 at 11:58 am

Good post and I agree with your ethics!

Jason Bartholme October 22, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Some good pointers, Lyndoman. I have been using StumbleUpon for a while and have reaped some of the benefits. The link to your profile page on SU seems like a good way to drive users.

Brendan Picha October 22, 2007 at 6:04 pm

Screw posting to Sphinn! I’m sending my posts to StumbleUpon via Lyndoman!!! :)

Mike October 24, 2007 at 6:09 pm

And to think I was happy with just over 40….waaaaaagh!
